Auckland Zoo - Exotic Bird

Exotic Bird Holding Area

Bespoke animal enclosures using custom fabricated steel fencing and specialist bird netting.

In 2015 Hampden Fence was re-approached by the team at Auckland Zoo to assist with another specialist animal enclosure project: the fabrication and installation of an exotic bird holding area within the new exotic bird aviaries.

auckland_zoo_logo.jpg

Hampden was engaged to fabricate the steelwork for the enclosure using its in-house fabrication capabilities, which the Zoo has used extensively on previous other projects.

Hampden had regular contact with main contractor, Q Construction, the Zoo and its keepers to detail the design as it developed and evolved. This ensured the end result was fit for purpose and exactly what the Zoo required:

  • Custom fabricated steel enclosure framing

  • Specialist bird netting

  • Lockable swing gates to match the overall aesthetics of the enclosure

  •  Installation management

Up For The Challenge

The design of the enclosure meant the job was labour intensive and challenging, especially as the design continued to evolve to meet the needs of the Zoo.  The team at the Zoo leverage Hampden’s strength in fabrication and understand that its requirements are always a bit out of the box.

“We appreciate there is no Zoo shop” says Carl Milner from the Zoo – recognising that there is always a bespoke element to what it needs.  And Hampden loves working with the Zoo as “out of the ordinary is what we do well”, says Kristian Baldwin – Hampden’s General Manager.

A Proud Partner Of Choice For Auckland Zoo

Hampden has enjoyed working with the team at Auckland Zoo for many years now and has been involved in some of its most high profile enclosures including Tiger Territory, Pride Lands, and the Orangutan enclosure. Hampden works closely to ensure the unique requirements of each project are understood, and recognises the need to ensure all projects are completed on time due to the exotic species of animals involved.

Pak'N Save

Custom Fabrication And Automation

On 10 November 2015, Pak'N Save opened a new store at 240 Ormiston Road, South East Auckland.  The massive 6160m2 store employs 130 staff and has been warmly welcomed by the local community.

hampden_pakn_save_10.png

An integral element of the effective daily functioning and security of the supermarket site is a set of large automated gates into and out of the Inwards Goods area, at the side of the complex.

The gates were architecturally designed by Jasmax to seamlessly blend with the overall aesthetics of the site, whilst ensuring hassle-free use and robust high security.  Hampden Fence was contracted to custom fabricate the large 3.1m (h) x 10m (w) sliding gates and project manage their transport to site, installation and automation.

  • 3.1m x 10m custom fabricated sliding gates

  • Perforated aluminium cladding

  • Double gates and matching panels

  • Industrial grade high-speed gate automation

The scale of the gates provided a number of challenges throughout the project.  Their size meant they were awkward to manoeuvre during fabrication and transportation, and more complex to install than most typically smaller gates. Hampden's expert team was able to call on many years of experience and well planned processes to ensure the project was successfully completed on time and to budget.

Otahuhu Precinct

Otahuhu Precinct - Otahuhu, Auckland

Custom steel fencing, Vitex timber fencing, Pipe & Mesh Chainlink fencing, Gates, Timber acoustic fencing

The $30.9m Otahuhu Recreational Precinct was officially opened on Saturday, 8 August and is a multi-purpose community facility that includes a new library, aquatic centre, outdoor water play area, community teaching garden, a new playground and an upgraded fitness centre. The facility will allow Otahuhu residents to come together to swim, play, read and relax.

The design of the precinct takes inspiration from Otahuhu itself, with Pacific and Maori-inspired elements, and reflects the diversity of the community and create a sense of place for Otahuhu. Hampden installed a range of fencing solutions across the precinct, including:

Architecturally-designed, custom-fabricated metal fence and matching gate - around the aquatic centre and outdoor water play area
Vitex Timber & Aluminium Fencing - around the outdoor playing spaces closet to the roadside boundary of the site
Pipe & Mesh fencing with pedestrian swing gate and rubbish enclosure - towards rear of site for easy on-site access
Timber Acoustic fencing - for use on site perimeter that borders neighbouring households.

Hampden worked closely with main contractor NZ Strong Construction and various other subcontracted trades, to complete the Auckland Council project on time and on budget.

Ilico Apartments

Custom Aluminium Fencing, Custom Gates, Genius Gate Automation

Earlier this year, we helped to complete custom aluminium fencing, steel gates and gate automation for the Ilico Apartments on Bluegrey Avenue, Stonefields (Auckland).

ilico_apartments_logo.jpg

We provided 130m of powdericoated custom aluminium fencing that was all fabricated in-house at Hampden Fence. We also installed 5 powder-coated aluminium self-closing pedestrian access gates to seamlessly match the perimeter fencing.  Two custom fabricated 7m heavy-duty steel gates were also powder-coated and installed on site for vehicle access control. These gates were automated using high quality Italian made sliding gate operators.

Auckland South Corrections Facility

High Security Prison Fencing

Background

Auckland South Corrections Facility (ASCF) is a high security men’s prison located at Wiri, Auckland. ASCF is operated by Serco New Zealand under a Public Private Partnership with the Department of Corrections.  The prison opened in May 2015, after a complex 29-month (approx.) construction period.

As New Zealand’s recognised leader in high security prison fencing, Hampden was engaged to work with all other key project stakeholders, including Serco, Spotless (Maintenance), Fletcher Construction (Main Contractor), Mode Design & Peddle Thorp (Architects), Beca (Structural Engineers) and multiple sub-contractors.

Strategic Design Advice

Hampden Fence was involved at a very early stage of the project, supporting both the architects and the main contractor with initial design concepts and advice throughout until the designs were ultimately finalised.

Hampden was also the first sub-contractor on site, creating an access point for the earthworks to commence.  Some months later it began the custom fabrication of the high security fencing solutions to feature across the prison site.

Compliance, Cooperation, Communication

The Wiri Prison project presented a range of [typical] challenges, all of which Hampden managed to ensure minimal impact on the seamless delivery of each stage of the work:

  • Required level of documentation - Specifications and certifications

  • Operational difficulties due to restricted access around and to site

  • Restricted space available for product and multiple product relocations

  • Many main contractor managers with various conflicting scheduling requirements

  • Minimal input from main contractor for design issues – very reliant on HF

  • Required level of communication and detailing

  • Slow to receive finalised design detail on variation work

  • Compacted programme near completion

The value of working with the prison high security fencing experts

Hampden is New Zealand’s most experienced prison high security fencing company, with involvement on 11 prisons and other CYFS youth correctional facilities.  Hampden worked with Fletcher Construction on Mt Eden Prison redevelopment project and is also working with it on Paremoremo Prison.  Hampden is trusted to meet all design and fabrication challenges, communicate well with key stakeholders, and provide excellent documentation through each project.  It also brings exceptional Health & Safety performance – with no major incidents on the Wiri Prison project. Hampden’s experience brings with it a clear understanding of the optimal level of required on-site resources, and with its own in-house fabrication capabilities, its ability to ensure the very highest standards of quality control are second-to-none.

Project Scope:

  • 850m of 4.8m high perimeter high security fencing

  • 3m high internal 358 anti-climb high security fencing

  • Preliminary temporary site fencing

  • Various other high security fencing – internal and external

Fairfax Media

Internal Chainlink Enclosure with Bike Racks

Fairfax Media recently invested over $7million in their brand new Ponsonby premises, which is home to more than 500 of their Auckland staff members each working day.

The move aimed to ease transport for the business’s many staff.

hampden_fairfax_media_1.jpg

With this, Fairfax’s contractor Ebert Construction contacted Hampden Fence to assist with an aspect of the building, which also contributes to the ease of transport.

Hampden installed a purpose built pipe & mesh chainlink bike enclosure and bike racks to provide a dedicated, safe space for cyclists within the building’s busy carparks.

Sylvia Park - Internal Caged Storage

Internal Caged Storage with Fall Arrest Cables

With more than 200 stores, Sylvia Park is one of New Zealand’s largest shopping malls. The site keeps on growing with the addition of more international brands like Zara and H&M.

hampden_sylvia_park_logo.png

With Sylvia Park’s growing list of new stores, the need for more storage went hand-in-hand. Kiwi Property called upon Hampden to install purpose-built internal storage cages using Pipe & Mesh Chainlink enclosures. Each enclosure door includes a fall arrest safety cable, a standard addition to all swing gates installed by Hampden . These cables ensure the safety of staff using the storage units if the gate hinge were to become damaged and fail, the fall arrest cable would prevent the gate from falling and therefore protect a person from being injured.

Ceres Organic Foods

A new home for NZ's most sustainable food

Back in 1982, a group of people decided that organic food products were the way of the future and Ceres Organics was born.

hampden_ ceres_1.png

Today, Ceres distributes to an extensive and growing organic food store network across New Zealand and Australia, which demands Ceres whole food products. In September 2013, Ceres moved into a new headquarters on Carbine Road in Mt Wellington Auckland - the first 5-star plus ecological warehouse to be built in New Zealand. This exceptional new distribution facility features a stunning new office facility at the front roadside end of the site and a large distribution facility to the rear, purpose-designed to meet the needs of the business.

Pipe & Mesh Fencing with additional barbed wire security

Hampden Fence helped Ceres to secure its new site with high quality, New Zealand-made Pipe & Mesh chainlink fencing (in a black PVC finish) with additional barbed wire security on top.  The black PVC finish allows the Pipe & Mesh chainlink fencing to subtly blend into its surroundings - which ensure the site remains highly secure, but without the overall impression of a prison or fortress.  Robust and proven effective, Pipe & Mesh chainlink fencing, with the added security of barbed wire, still remains one of the most effective perimeter fencing options available.

A range of Custom Gate Solutions for easy egress on site

At the entrance to the site, Ceres wanted to make a bold statement to complement its impressive new office facilities. A custom automated sliding gate was installed between large feature stone entrance walls, with a stylish modern twist. A manual pedestrian gate was added next to the office area, and inner gates on site are Black PVC Pipe & Mesh with Automation. The various gate specifications were as follows:

Custom Gates
100 x 100 SHS gate posts | 50 x 50 SHS gate frames with 16mm tubes | 2m high | Automation

Pedestrian Access Gate
100 x 100 SHS gate posts | 50 x 50 SHS gate frames with 16mm tubes | 2m high | Manual

Internal Access Gate
Black PVC Pipe & Mesh Chainlink | Automation

Sliding Access Gate
Titan Tubular Steel 2 Rail | Powder coated Black | Manual

Auckland Zoo Specialist Animal Enclosures

Animal Enclosures

Background

To achieve enclosures that suit the ongoing needs of Auckland Zoo and its animals, Hampden works closely with the Zoo’s Life Sciences team to design robust and sustainable fencing solutions. Working with the zoo has special requirements, urgency being one. As the largest and most competent fencing company in New Zealand, Hampden uses its scale to allocate the appropriate levels of resource to ensure each project is successfully delivered to deadline.

Hampden Fence has been very helpful in the planning process. We usually know what we want to achieve, but we rely heavily on Hampden’s specialist product knowledge to know if we can deliver on these ideas. Hampden is always available to discuss the various options and they’re really flexible, which makes them easy to deal with.
— Michael Batty, Auckland Zoo Curator

The Customer

In December 1922, Auckland City Council officially opened Auckland Zoo in Western Springs. Auckland Zoo covers approximately 17 hectares and currently has around 179 species of animal (1300+ individual animals).

This terrain is always developed as ‘naturally’ as possible for each species, and is therefore often undulating and challenging. Hampden has consistently demonstrated an ability to deliver large-scale enclosures that enhance the zoo footprint.

The Key Challenges

  • Planning & Design Support: Hampden’s fencing expertise has been invaluable, especially during the initial planning and design stages of major enclosures, providing practical and cost effective solutions to fit the Zoo's 'wish-list'

  • Flexibility: Demonstrate an ability to ‘roll with the punches’ and remain flexible at all times, recognising that things do not always go to plan when animals are involved.

  • Resource Allocation: Because Hampden employs its own fencing teams, when the Zoo requires projects to be completed quickly and with minimal disruption to the animals, Hapmden has proven time and time again it can make it happen.

The Solution

Hampden Fence has assisted Auckland Zoo in developing and renovating some of its most popular large-scale enclosures, including Tiger Territory, Giraffe Valley and the Pridelands enclosure. "Hampden Fence has been very helpful in the planning process", says Auckland Zoo Curator Michael Batty.

"We usually know what we want to achieve, but we rely heavily on Hampden’s specialist product knowledge to know if we can deliver on these ideas”, adds Michael. “Hampden is always available to discuss the various options and they’re really flexible, which makes them easy to deal with", says Mr. Batty.

New Zealand's Largest & Most Competent

Hampden is New Zealand’s largest and most competent fencing company, and that made it an easy choice for Auckland Zoo when appointing a preferred supplier for fencing and gate solutions.

"Hampden understand the urgent needs we have because animals are involved”, says Michael. “They seem to have the size and manpower to be able to drop everything and help us get things done in a hurry, which is perfect", he concludes.

The Warehouse Group

Keeping the garden departments safe and secure

the_warehouse_logo.png

The Warehouse Group is the largest retail group operating in New Zealand, and is one of the nation's most iconic brands. With 90 stores across New Zealand, The Warehouse is one of the largest employers, with more than 7,500 staff across its local operations.

Most New Zealanders will have visited one or more of The Warehouse sites and will have encountered a highly consistent store experience, right down to the attached 'outdoor' garden centres at the rear of each store.

Stylish and secure Anti-Climb Rigid Mesh Fencing

In 2012, The Warehouse Group added a new store to its portfolio in opening its 90th store at Pah Road, Mt Roskill. The typical Warehouse approach was followed, including a secure Garden Centre at the rear of the building. The Warehouse Group appointed Hampden Fence to complete the high security fencing for the garden department and selected 358 Anti-Climb Rigid Mesh as the ideal solution to meet its specific needs for the garden area.

358 Anti-Climb Rigid Mesh is a fantastic product. Our main priority was high security, but we also didn't want a product that would make our business look like a prison. 358 Rigid Mesh is extremely secure and it doesn't look like any other garden centre I've seen, which is also great. Richard Curry (Manager - The Warehouse, Mt Roskill)

The proven performance of 358 rigid mesh fencing

After the successful completion of the garden centre at The Warehouse Mt Roskill, The Warehouse Group added a new garden centre to its existing store at The Warehouse Auckland Airport. Hampden Fence was again appointed to complete the high security fencing of the new garden department, and on the back of the success at Pah Road, 358 Rigid Mesh was once again used to secure the area.

In using 358 Rigid Mesh at both sites, The Warehouse enjoys ultimate peace-of-mind that its spaces are absolutely secure, with exceptional resistance to tampering, vandalism or intrusion. At the same time, 358 offers exceptional levels of natural light and visibility, which is extremely important in any retail environment. The fencing is also very stylish, which is an important consideration to any market-leading brand.

Papakura Central School Pool

Wrought Iron fencing

Background

Papakura Central School is a co-ed state primary school in the heart of Papakura, Auckland. With a role of almost 400 students, Papakura Central School has a focus on being a ‘Thinking, Creative School’, encouraging its pupils to ‘have fun while learning'. The school pool is a major draw-card for fun, and with saline cloth-covered wire mesh fencing starting to look ragged, Papakura Central’s Board of Trustees decided to replace the fence in order to meet local authority standards, and to ensure it was in keeping with the rest of the school’s high security fencing.

The Hampden team was great from start to finish. Pricing and timelines were clear, and we were kept well informed of when Hampden’s installation staff would be on-site. I must commend James and his installation crew. They sought verbal confirmation at every stage of the job, ensuring my expectations were always met.
— Barbara Duckworth, Papakura Central’s Principal.

The Customer

Papakura Central School helps its students to achieve their potential by teaching them knowledge, skills and attitudes in a positive and challenging environment. As a focal point in the local community, Papakura Central takes great pride in its facilities and is committed to the safety and security of its staff, pupils and all visitors. In choosing a replacement fence for its pool, Papakura Central School needed a solution that would not only ensure this ongoing safety, but would also stand the test of time in style.

The Key Challenges

  • Secure and Robust: Deliver a robust high security fence with poles unable to be prized open, to deter uninvited visitors and vandals

  • Stylish: Deliver a solution that is attractive, in keeping with the school’s existing perimeter fencing, and able to seamlessly ‘integrate’ into the undulating site surrounding the pool enclosure.

  • Cost -effective: Provide a cost-effective fencing solution that represented excellent value for money.

The Solution

Hampden Fence installed a Solid Wrought Iron High Security Fence topped with Arrow Spikes around the pool enclosure that matched the rest of the school’s perimeter fencing. “The Hampden team was great from start to finish”, says Barbara Duckworth, Papakura Central’s Principal.

“Pricing and timelines were clear, and we were kept well informed of when Hampden’s installation staff would be on-site”, adds Barbara. “I must commend James and his installation crew. They sought verbal confirmation at every stage of the job, ensuring my expectations were always met”.

New Zealand's Largest and Most Competent

Hampden is New Zealand’s largest and most competent fencing company, which made it an easy choice for Papakura School when choosing a supplier for its replacement pool high security fence. “We really wanted the new fence to blend in with the pool environment, and we didn’t want the fence to look staggered down the slope of the hill”, says Barbara. “We are delighted with the way the new fence runs parallel to the ground, following the natural gradient of the land”.

Fulton Hogan Project DART

Noise Attenuation Walls

Background

Project DART is the Government's $600 million upgrade of the Auckland rail network being carried out by ONTRACK (New Zealand Railways Corporation). When completed, it will deliver a rail network capable of more frequent and reliable commuter services, allowing rail to play a more prominent role in the region's public transport network. The Newmarket corridor is on the Western Line - the busiest on the Auckland network - and rebuilding the station, junction and surrounding track was a critical part of Project DART.

Having previously worked with Hampden, we were confident in their ability to dedicate the on-site resources required to get the job done on time. They reacted to all of our late [client-driven] changes quickly and positively, and being able to rely on that was important on a project of this size and significance.
— Stuart Pilat, Project Manager DART 2

The Customer

Fulton Hogan is one of Australasia's fastest growing civil contracting companies, and it was appointed key contract partner to ONTRACK for Project DART. The $51 million Newmarket upgrade (duplication of the existing track and the lowering of track levels to allow for future electrification) is the largest project ever undertaken by Fulton Hogan Civil - Northern Region. With challenging and strict project deadlines to meet and a contractual responsibility for all future design liabilities, Fulton Hogan needed to find attractive and robust noise attenuation wall solutions from a fencing partner that could guarantee the resources needed to meet all required delivery dates.

Key Challenges

  • Ensuring a robust solution was delivered, without having to compromise on overall design and product aesthetics

  • Minimise risk of design liability by using products that carry and extended product warranty wherever possible

  • Appointing a partner with enough dedicated resource to ensure all project deadlines were consistently met

The Solution

Having successfully delivered noise attenuation walls for the recent Mt Roskill State Highway 20 Redevelopment, Fulton Hogan again turned to Hampden for a railway noise attenuation solution. “We originally planned to use a standard plywood solution, when Hampden recommended we use EzyShield Commercial, an attractive product with high acoustic performance (up to 30dB reduction), and supplied with a 40-year warranty against glue failure”, says Stuart Pilat, Project Manager DART 2.

“There was a small premium for us to use EzyShield Commercial, but we felt it was worth the additional investment to ensure we were using a product that would stand the test of time”, says Mr. Pilat. “Fulton Hogan is responsible for all future design liabilities, and therefore using a product with a 40-Year Product Warranty is extremely important to us”, he explains.

The nature of rail work demands extremely long hours, often working into the night, on weekends and even public holidays. “Having previously worked with Hampden, we were confident in their ability to dedicate the on-site resources required to get the job done on time”, says Mr. Pilat. “They reacted to all of our late [client-driven] changes quickly and positively, and being able to rely on that was important on a project of this size and significance”, says Mr. Pilat.

New Zealand’s Largest and Most Competent

Hampden is New Zealand’s largest and most competent fencing company, and that made it an easy choice for Fulton Hogan, who needed a reliable and secure partner they could trust to deliver to strict deadlines. “Hampden performed to a consistently high level and made an excellent job of the noise attenuation walls”, says Mr. Pilat. “Hampden’s Project Manager, Kristian Baldwin, was great to work with and he did everything in his power to make things happen in what were often quite challenging conditions”, he concludes.

Fulton Hogan State Highway 20 Redevelopment

Background

The State Highway 20 Mt Roskill Extension is a key part of a new Western Ring Route that will play an important role in reducing central Auckland congestion by enabling traffic to completely bypass the Auckland Harbour Bridge. With a cost of $201m, the SH20 redevelopment is one of New Zealand's most significant roading projects and key contractor Fulton Hogan was subject to strict timelines within which to deliver the project. Fulton Hogan needed a fencing partner it could trust to deliver on time and in full, ensuring it could open the new motorway by the agreed contract date.

They stepped up brilliantly when we needed them to, and we were able to open the new Motorway on the 15th of May, the date we had to commit to back in 2008
— Mr. Dickens, Fulton Hogan

The Customer

Fulton Hogan is one of Australasia's fastest growing civil contracting companies, and it was appointed key contract partner to the New Zealand Transport Agency for the SH20 redevelopment.

Responsible for all aspects of the project including earth works, site works, road construction, drainage, concrete, metalling, soil stabilisation, kerb and channeling, surfacing and road marking, Fulton Hogan also needed to provide effective fencing solutions before the project could be completed and opened.

“All of the fencing work could only start to take place once all of the other major work had been completed”, says Tony Dickens, Project Manager for Fulton Hogan. “This was always going to mean an inevitable bottle neck in the final 6 months of the 3½ year project”, he adds.

Because the new motorway extension could not be opened until all security, noise and landscaping fencing was completely finished, Fulton Hogan appointed Hampden as its fencing partner, relying heavily on them to help meet its contract obligations.

The Key Challenges

Provide cost effective and attractive Noise Wall, Motorway Security and Landscape Fencing solutions.
Deliver to tight time-frames, ensuring all product was delivered on time and in full.
Resource the project adequately to ensure the open date was met.

The Solution

“Hampden was sat firmly in the hot seat for SH20 and they responded big time”, says Mr. Dickens. “They poured resources in and made sure they were extremely well organised, as they knew we could not afford any down time at the business end of the project”, he adds. With the largest fencing team in New Zealand, Hampden was able to commit to working longer hours than normal (including Saturdays) to ensure Fulton Hogan would meet its open date obligations.

Mainzeal Project Century

Background

Project Century was the relocation of Lion Nathan's iconic Newmarket manufacturing and warehousing facility to a new greenfields location in East Tamaki, Auckland. The new facility, spread over 16.7 hectares, was built by Mainzeal - Northern Region over a period of 28 months, and was unique in that the construction team was required to integrate into a progressively functioning brewery operation. Site security, and preventing the entry of all unauthorised people at every stage of construction, was therefore a key project deliverable for Mainzeal.

Hampden Fence consistently performed to a very high level throughout the project, and that meant we were very comfortable in our own ability to meet our high security performance measures from Lion Nathan
— Mr. Hayes, Mainzeal

The Customer

Mainzeal Property and Construction Ltd has been at the forefront of the New Zealand construction industry since 1968. The company has established a reputation for the delivery of high-quality construction, infrastructure and refurbishment projects and it has extensive experience particularly within the health, education, government, local municipal, industrial, commercial, recreational and sport, retail and hospitality building sectors. With the high-profile nature and vast scale of the new Lion Nathan Brewery location, Mainzeal had to find a high security fencing partner that could guarantee the resources to ensure it remained responsive to the changing needs of the site at all times.

The Key Challenges

  • Provide secure perimeter fencing for the site at every stage of construction

  • Ensure specific high-risk areas across the site remained secure at all times

  • Appointing a partner with enough dedicated resource to ensure all project deadlines were consistently met

The Solution

Having previously worked together on other high profile projects, Mainzeal once again engaged Hampden to provide fencing and high security solutions for Project Century. “We needed to ensure the entire site had adequate perimeter fencing, even at the start of the project, for obvious Health & Safety reasons and to address high security issues such as theft”, says Bruce Hayes, Site Civil Engineer for Mainzeal.

Hampden's close proximity to the Lion Nathan site meant that it was able to quickly and effectively provide the product and resources Mainzeal required to meet tight deadlines at various stages of the project. “We would have at least 1km of Temp Fencing in place at any one time and as work moved around the site Hampden's response times for updates and emergency call-outs was exceptional”, says Mr. Hayes.

Hampden brought in a Bobcat to help Mainzeal clear some unruly terrain that was riddled with Gorse and other growth. “We were very impressed with the resources that Hampden had at its disposal, and its access to other quality sub-contractors was strong”, adds Mr. Hayes. The perimeter was ultimately electrified and Hampden's Electrification Team swung into action. “We were impressed with the competency of Hampden’s electrics team”, says Mr. Hayes. “I would ring with timing details for the 4 zones and if it wasn't sorted that day it was addressed the day after”, he adds.
